Residents of Pag-asa Island did not appreciate Sen. Rodante Marcoleta’s call to “give up” the Kalayaan Island Group.
In a senate hearing, Marcoleta asks what exactly are we fighting for saying lives are being offered "for something that is not even within our EEZ."
He further adds, "ang gawin natin po para madali, i-give up natin ang Kalayaan Island Group (KIG)."
Experts clarifies it is wrong to say that the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) is the basis of the Philippine's claim on the KIG, noting it has long been occupied and is legally part of Philippine territory.
Marcoleta however clarifies that he did not say that the island be given away.
